The school follows the British Academic system and implements relevant innovations in teaching techniques, assessment and methodology, as appropriate. Any pupil should be able to transfer directly to any independent or state school in Britain without undue difficulty, should the need arise, as academic levels attained at Mombasa Academy are equivalent to, or in advance of those institutions.

The following is a guide to how your child may progress through the school.

Junior

  • Playgroup: Age 2 to 3

  • Kindergarten: Age 3 to 4

  • Transition: Age 5

  • Class 1: Age 6

  • Class 2: Age 7

As an introduction to full time education in Class 3, attendance hours increase by three afternoons a week.

Preparatory

  • Class 3-6: Age 8 to 11

  • Regular assessments take place in the form of half term and end of term tests, and end of year internal examinations.

  • All pupils in Class 6 sit the ISEB (Independent Schools Examining Broad) Common Entrance Exam in English, Mathematics and Science.

Secondary

  • Class 7-11: Age 12-16

  • G.C.E ’O’ Level and I.G.C.S.E subject choices are made in Year 9. Subjects offered are Art, Biology, Economics, English, French, Geography, Chemistry, History, Mathematics, Physics, English Literature and Pure Mathematics.

  • These external examinations are taken at the end of year 11.

  • Physical Education is compulsory until year 11.

Sixth Form

  • Class 12-13: Age 17-18

  • AS and A2 examinations are taken at this level.
