Music lessons in the school are structured to meet the following objectives:

§    To allow learners practical skills.

§    To expose learners to different musical genres.

§    To introduce learners to use of notation, ranging from standard to use of graphic scores.

§    To allow learners opportunities for self expression through regular performances.

§    To give learners an opportunity to measure their individual success through international examinations offered by ABRSM for both practical works as well as instrumental music.

Activities:

At the end of each term, students are given an opportunity to perform pieces that they have leant during the period. The items selected may be choral, instrumental, solo voice or dance. These are performed during an evening dubbed “musical evening”

Music Club

Members of this club meet once every week for one hour to participate in ensemble work. Learners are taught the art of discerning various sound layers, making judgements on textures and different timbres of sound. The students are also taught conducting and directing of bands as well as use of electronic equipment.

ABRSM.

A number of student in the prep school are now being encouraged to do these exams. It is good to note that there are about 15 students expected to do the practical exams and another 5 expected to do the theory examinations this year (2009). Most students do piano exams and it is our hope that in the near future we shall have more students doing exams in woodwinds or strings.
