Since time immemorial man has been expressing himself artistically as we can see from the cave paintings in Europe and Africa. At the Mombasa Academy the subject of Art is emphasized. Our pupils are taught Art right from kindergarten years up to the sixth form.  The objectives of the Art Department are to :

  • train our pupils to appreciate Art of different cultures.

  • Familiarize them with different art materials and processes.

  • Learn from other artists [ both old masters and contemporary artists].

  • Boost their artistic skills through creative tasks, fire up their imagination, improve their dexterity and decision-making, all with the aim of offering them a rich and varied Art education to prepare them for fulfilling careers and make this world a better place, aesthetically, to live in.

We follow the British curriculum. Drawing, painting and sculpture are taught. Pupils are encouraged to also explore digital Art and photography and use the internet to research and learn more.

Formal Art lessons start in Year 3 and Years 3 to 9 have two lessons [of forty minutes each] whereas Years 10 and 11 have four lessons and sixth formers have 8 lessons per week. We have a spacious Art Room which is located in a quiet, shaded and well-ventilated corner of the school which   creates a conducive environment and the right ambience to do creative work.

We offer both IGCSE and A-level Art. Details of the course contents can be found in the Edexcel website www.edexcel.co.uk. Both the IGCSE and A-level courses follow a thematic approach whereby students work from a given theme. They are supposed to do preparatory studies and sit for a timed examination. In the latter they do their final artwork. Marks are given and grades rewarded for both the preparatory work and the examination artwork. The assessment for the latter and preparatory studies are based on the candidates meeting four assessment objectives [details of which can be found in the Edexcel website]

Pupils get every opportunity to express themselves by participating in an Annual Inter-schools Art Competition, Peace Poster Design Competition and various others.
